Candle Care 101: How to Burn Candles Safely and Evenly

How to Get More From Your Scented Candle

A well-cared-for candle burns more evenly, releases fragrance beautifully, and creates a calmer ritual at home. Whether you are enjoying Velvet Peony & Oud, Pink Peony & Blush Suede, Sweet Pear & Freesia, Dark Honey & Tobacco, or another Phoenix Flames fragrance, a few simple habits make a real difference.

About the Wax

Phoenix Flames candles are made with water-soluble rapeseed and coconut wax. This gives the candle its particular wax blend and makes cleaning the vessel straightforward once the candle has fully cooled.

Candle care is also about safety. Always read the product label first and use the candle exactly as directed. The guidance below is a practical starting point, not a replacement for the safety instructions supplied with your candle.

Before You Light Your Candle

  • Place the candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep it away from curtains, books, paper, draughts, children, pets, and anything flammable.
  • Check the glass or vessel for cracks, chips, or other damage before lighting.
  • Trim the wick to around 5mm if the product instructions recommend it. A shorter, tidy wick generally helps reduce excess soot and an overlarge flame.
  • Remove decorative pieces, wick trimmings, matches, and any packaging from the wax surface.

The First Burn Is the Most Important

For a clean-burning candle, the first burn matters most. Allow the melt pool to reach the entire diameter of the glass, from edge to edge, before extinguishing the candle. This helps the wax establish an even burn pattern and reduces the chance of tunnelling on future burns.

Never leave the candle unattended while the melt pool is forming. Follow the candle's maximum recommended burn time and do not keep it burning beyond the safety guidance just to reach the edge. If the melt pool cannot reach the full diameter within the recommended session, extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, and follow the product guidance rather than extending the burn unsafely.

How to Burn a Candle Safely

  • Keep the wick upright and roughly central while the wax is liquid, but never touch or move a lit candle.
  • Keep the flame away from draughts, fans, open windows, and busy areas where it could be knocked.
  • Burn only one candle at a time on a small surface, leaving space between candles if more than one is being used in the room.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended, burning while you sleep, or burning when you leave the room.
  • Keep the candle within sight and extinguish it if the flame becomes too high, flickers aggressively, or produces heavy smoke.

How to Extinguish a Candle

Use a snuffer if you have one, or carefully follow the method recommended on the label. Avoid blowing hard across the wax, as this can send hot wax or embers onto nearby surfaces. Never use water to extinguish a candle. Once the flame is out, allow the wax and vessel to cool completely before moving, cleaning, or relighting the candle.

How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling

Tunnelling happens when the centre of the wax melts but a ring of unmelted wax remains around the edge. It is most often linked to a first burn that was stopped before the melt pool reached the entire diameter of the glass, short later burns, or an uneven setup.

  • Make the first burn your priority and allow the melt pool to reach edge to edge across the glass.
  • Place the candle on a level surface so the wax can melt evenly.
  • Give later burns enough time to develop an even melt pool, without exceeding the label's maximum burn time.
  • Trim the wick before later burns, but do not cut it so short that the flame struggles to stay lit.
  • Keep the candle away from draughts that make the flame lean to one side.

Do not try to correct a candle by wrapping the vessel in foil or using improvised heat treatments. Follow the maker's guidance and stop using the candle if the vessel becomes too hot or damaged.

When to Trim the Wick

After the candle has cooled completely, remove any blackened wick tip or loose debris before the next burn. Keep the wick neat and follow the manufacturer's recommended length. Never trim or adjust a wick while the candle is lit or while the wax is hot.

When Should You Stop Burning a Candle?

Stop using a candle when the label says to stop, when the vessel is damaged, or when only the recommended amount of wax remains. As a general safety rule, do not burn a container candle right down to the base. A shallow layer of wax protects the vessel from excessive heat, but the product label always takes priority.

Also stop immediately if the glass cracks, the flame reaches the vessel, the wick moves significantly, or the candle produces persistent heavy smoke despite correct wick care.

How to Clean and Reuse Your Candle Jar

Once the candle and vessel are completely cool, the remaining wax residue can be washed out with hot soapy water. Small amounts of residue wax will not clog your drains, but avoid pouring large amounts of melted wax down the sink. Let larger amounts cool and remove them separately according to your normal household-waste guidance.

Phoenix Flames candle glass is heat-treated and is not suitable for household glass recycling. Rather than putting the empty vessel in the recycling bin, consider reusing it where appropriate or choosing one of our candle refills. Only reuse a vessel for a refill when it is undamaged and the refill is designed to fit it, and always follow the refill instructions.

How to Store Your Candle

  • Store candles upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid hot windowsills, radiators, damp rooms, and areas with large temperature changes.
  • Do not stack heavy items on top of a glass candle vessel.

Common Candle-Care Questions

Why is my candle producing soot?

Soot can be linked to a wick that is too long, a draught, an overlarge flame, or debris in the wax. Extinguish the candle, allow it to cool fully, trim the wick as directed, and move the candle away from air movement before trying again.

Why is the flame small?

A small flame can happen when the wick is over-trimmed, the wax pool is deep, or the candle is not on a level surface. Extinguish it if needed, let it cool, and follow the product instructions before the next burn.

Can I move a candle while it is burning?

No. Extinguish the flame and wait until the wax and vessel are completely cool before moving the candle.

Can I reuse the candle jar?

Yes, the jar can be washed in hot soapy water once it has cooled completely. The heat-treated glass is not suitable for household glass recycling, but an undamaged vessel may be reusable with a compatible Phoenix Flames candle refill. Follow the refill instructions and do not reuse damaged glass.

A Simple Candle-Care Checklist

  • Read the label before the first burn.
  • Use a level, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep the flame in sight and away from children, pets, draughts, and flammable items.
  • Keep the wick tidy and trim only when the candle is cool.
  • On the first burn, allow the melt pool to reach the entire diameter of the glass without exceeding the recommended burn time.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle.
  • Wash cooled jars with hot soapy water, but do not pour large amounts of melted wax down the sink.
  • Keep heat-treated candle glass out of household glass recycling and consider a compatible refill.
  • Let the candle cool completely before moving or relighting it.
  • Stop using it if the vessel, wick, flame, or wax behaves unexpectedly.

Enjoy the Ritual

Good candle care is simple: prepare the candle properly, make the first burn count, give the candle your attention while it burns, and let it cool fully afterwards. Those small habits help you enjoy your chosen fragrance more safely, whether you reach for a soft floral, a fresh fruity scent, or a warm, comforting blend.
